Adobe has announced the ‘End of Life’ for June 2025. This version will continue to be supplied with updates until this date and can continue to be used without any concerns.

Acrobat Pro 2020 is the purchase version that was activated on the end device via a serial number in the case of the UBT licence agreement. This version is still supplied with updates by the manufacturer, but is not updated to ‘more modern’ versions of the software.

Acrobat Pro DC is the rental version. DC stands for ‘Document Cloud’. This version is continuously developed and always updated with the latest software version from Adobe. Adobe calls this ‘continuous release’. Internally, this version also has its own version number. This can be viewed via ‘Help > About Acrobbat Pro’. This always starts with the year followed by the release number. For example, 2024.002.20985. The rental version can only be used with a personal user account.

Adobe has been changing its licence models for years. Purchased versions of Creative Cloud products have no longer been available for many years. In November 2024, the last (relevant) purchased version, Acrobat Pro, was replaced by the rental model.

Unfortunately not. Adobe's ETLA framework agreement does not include individual product licenses for other products (with the exception of Acrobat DC and Captivate). You can only obtain the ‘Creative Cloud All Apps’.

When the license is obtained via the webshop, an Adobe user account (‘company and educational institution account’) is automatically set up for the user and the purchased license is assigned to this account.

This person will then receive a confirmation e-mail from the sender ‘message@adobe.com’ stating that they now have access to the Adobe application(s). In this e-mail you will find a note ‘Get started now’ (or similar). If you click on this, you will be asked to set a password for your Adobe account. The user account is then ready for use and the corresponding installation files can be downloaded.

Yes, you can use the license on as many devices as you have in use. Adobe products can be installed on all of these devices. However, they cannot be used on several devices at the same time in parallel operation. The licenses are assigned to your person, i.e. to your Adobe user account.

Yes, if the person no longer needs the license during the selected period of use because the tasks have changed, the person has left the UBT, etc., then the license can be transferred to another person. To do this, please contact software@uni-bayreuth.de and state the order number for the initial purchase of the respective license, the current and new licensee.

In terms of the basic licensing principle, this option makes no sense. A person cannot work on several devices at the same time. In this respect, the license-to-person assignment is a 1:1 assignment. Several people who want to use the Adobe Creative Cloud software, for example, all need their own named user license.

In the case of lab computers or shared workstations on which changing persons are to work with a device-based license, a so-called ‘shared device license’ is required. Please refer to the further questions further down in the text.

‘EnterpriseID’ is the term for a user account at Adobe to which a user-based license can be assigned. It essentially consists of the (fully qualified) university e-mail address (surname.familyname@uni-bayreuth.de) of the person who is to use a license. The EnterpriseID is comparable to the AdobeID known to private Adobe users. The main difference is that an AdobeID is a private ID owned by the individual and the EnterpriseID is a business ID owned by the educational institution.

No, named user licenses can only be obtained and used by UBT employees.

Adobe has introduced Shared Device Licensing for shared desktops (or lab computers). This type of license is a hybrid of device and person-based licensing. The number of devices and not the number of users is counted for licensing purposes. For example, if you have shared workplaces with several devices and changing users, then you will need this type of license.

To purchase a license, first search for ‘Creative Cloud’ in the quick search in the webshop. Please select the item ‘... Shared Device’. You need one license for each workplace that you want to equip with this, e.g. 2 licenses if you want to equip 2 devices.

Once you have purchased the license, you will receive installation files that you can install on the devices. The devices are then ready for use.

However, users also need an Adobe user account to log in to the Adobe applications. Please also read the following two questions and answers.

Adobe has made a login mandatory for all new licensing models. This initially sounds contradictory for device-based licenses, as you are licensing the device and not the person using it.

All users (whether students or employees) can only work on these shared devices after entering the credentials of an Adobe user account. However, the person does not need an assigned license. This is already installed on the device. It therefore makes no difference whether 2 or 20 different users log on to the device during the period of use.
