1. Description of the ListServ Service
The ListServ service is used for the central administration of mailing lists at the University of Bayreuth. This includes managing co-administrators, mailing list moderators, and subscribers. The lists can be administered via the web interface or by email.
The most important functions are listed below.
2. How the Mailing Lists Work
The ListServ service acts as a distributor of emails to subscribers or members of a mailing list, with each mailing list having its own email address. As soon as an email is sent to the mailing list address, it is forwarded to all members. Emails can be held back and confirmed by the administrators and moderators before they are sent to all members.
3. Requesting or Changing an E-mail Distribution List
New e-mail distribution lists can be requested using a form.
Please read the application carefully and enter all the necessary data. A basic distinction can be made between three types of mailing lists:
- Private lists
- Edited/moderated lists
- Distribution lists
Please refer to the application form for the exact differences between the respective lists.
4. Registration
You can register for the ListServ service on the ListServ page. You will then receive a confirmation email to complete the registration. Alternatively, you can also access the registration button via the web interface.


5. Views and Navigation
There are basically two overview menus: “List Management” and “Subscriber Options”.
The subscriber options are activated immediately after registration. Here, you can manage your subscriptions to email lists, such as unsubscribing from or subscribing to email lists, and manage your ListServ account. Examples include changing the password or modifying the view of your ListServ account.
The “List Management” sub-item is activated as soon as you are registered as an administrator, co-administrator, or moderator of an email distribution list. The individual sub-items for list management are detailed in point 6.

6. Management of E-mail Distribution Lists
The most important menu items for list management are shown below:
- List Dashboard: Provides an overview of all managed email distribution lists.
- List Moderation: If you manage a moderated list, messages or emails received must be confirmed and, if necessary, modified in this menu item before they are distributed to subscribers.
- List Configuration: General settings for a list can be made here. This includes all the properties of a distribution list listed in the application. Among other things, you can define additional co-administrators and moderators here.
- Subscriber Management: Here you can add, remove, or manage subscribers to a list. It is possible to define special display options for individual subscribers.
