In the lecture halls and seminar rooms, there is a network socket in the media control area that allows you to connect to the campus network via cable. To access the network, you need to use the VPN client.
VPN Client
You can download the necessary VPN client software from our intranet under “Software Procurement - VPN Client” after authentication. Please note the guidelines provided. You will need your personal bt ID and the corresponding password to use the VPN client.
VPN Client Settings:
Server: vpn-server.uni-bayreuth.de
Profile: campus
Note: It is not necessary to set up a proxy within the campus network.
Network Access in the Libraries (LAN)
To access the campus network via the network sockets available in the libraries, you need the VPN client. For this, the profile “campus” must be selected.
The VPN client
You can download the required VPN client software from our intranet under “Software Procurement – VPN Client” after authentication – please observe the guidelines. Additionally, you will need your personal bt-ID and the corresponding password for use.
VPN Client Settings:
Server: vpn-server.uni-bayreuth.de
Profile: campus
Note: Setting up a proxy to use the library services is not necessary on campus.
You can access the e-Learning platform, Panopto Server, MyFiles, or MS Exchange without using a VPN. In fact, it is not recommended to use a VPN for these services.
A VPN connection is also no longer required for literature research, as the demand from home is particularly high. Simply set the UBT proxy in your browser, for example, using the proxy add-on for Firefox. To meet legal requirements, such as for library services, your personal access data (bt ID) will be requested in the browser when you start surfing after activating the proxy.
All university members can connect to the campus network via Internet access and a VPN client, conveniently from their computer at home or abroad. This allows you to connect to our network virtually via an existing internet connection, as if you were on campus. This function is often used in conjunction with our proxy, for example, for accessing websites that would otherwise only be available from within the university.
The VPN Client
You can download the required VPN client software after authentication on our intranet under “Software Procurement - VPN Client” - please note the guidelines. You will also need a valid personal user ID and the corresponding password to use it.
VPN Client Settings:
Server: vpn-server.uni-bayreuth.de
Profile: outside
If you are using smartphones and other mobile devices, you will need the Cisco AnyConnect Client from the respective app store for VPN access from outside.
The Proxy
If you use Mozilla Firefox, you can install the “UniBT Proxy” add-on. It allows you to switch the proxy on and off with the touch of a button.
You can check both the VPN connection and the proxy setting yourself: https://proxycheck.uni-bayreuth.de

Guests and conference participants can use @BayernWLAN without prior registration. This service, operated by Vodafone on behalf of the Free State of Bavaria, is available on all Wi-Fi access points within the university alongside eduroam. Please note that the connection to the Wi-Fi hotspots is unencrypted:
- Connect to @BayernWLAN (SSID).
- Open any HTTP page (not HTTPS) in your browser (if not redirected automatically).
- Accept the user agreement and click “Connect”.
For more information, refer to the FAQ BayernWLAN and the overview of Bavarian hotspots. Support for @BayernWLAN
If you encounter issues with the BayernWLAN hotspots, please contact the special Vodafone hotline at 0800 6648386 or visit the Vodafone Community forum. The IT Service Center does not offer support for @BayernWLAN.
Note: When using @BayernWLAN, you are not connected to the university network. Therefore, some services (e.g., access to licensed online journals) may not be available.
