IT for digital teaching

The ITS multimedia team supports you in the realisation of various digital learning modules. The ‘Moodle’ platform is available to you as a central learning management system. The video platform ‘Panopto’ is suitable for uploading teaching videos and sharing them easily with students and even integrating them into ‘Moodle’. The associated ‘Panopto Recorder’ software makes it easy to record short teaching videos such as screencasts - even a live stream is possible. We also offer ‘eLectures’. These are recordings or live streams from classrooms, which can also be offered via ZOOM hybrid, for example. We are happy to support you in realising high-quality multimedia learning modules, such as how-to videos, VR environments or audio podcasts, together with the Centre for University Teaching (ZHL).

For important recordings, a mobile video studio has recently been made available in the MuVi room, in which the multimedia team can record video statements, interviews and podcasts in very high quality. We can offer this type of media production depending on the availability of the MuVi room as well as the personnel utilisation of the multimedia team.

Tools and offers for the creation of digital learning modules

The moodle learning management system is used as a platform for the distribution of learning and knowledge content to support lecturers. It is also available to all employees and students who wish to use the platform outside of teaching to exchange information within closed groups.

Modern university teaching would be unthinkable without a highly available learning management system with a wide range of functions.

Support is handled via the ticket system at elearning@uni-bayreuth.de.

There are currently three moodle instances with differentiated access authorisations and configurations to enrich undergraduate teaching (blended learning), to support a Bavaria-wide course offering (vhb) and for knowledge transfer in cooperation with external partners (elearning-external). In principle, all students and employees of the University of Bayreuth have access to the three systems. Depending on the system, other people can be granted access to the system (vhb students, vhb test users, external partners).

This platform is designed for internal use only. Access is granted with a personal identifier. External or guest users cannot access the content.

Creating courses

The assignment of a global course administrator role for creating courses can be requested informally by official e-mail.

For HiWis with student IDs, this must be authorised by the chair. The authorisation is only set to the course area of a chair for the current semester. The link to the course area of the chair and the student ID must be specified.

Duration of the provision of courses

The courses created in the semester structure are moved to the archive after one year and made available there for a further 4 years. On expiry, the corresponding semester area is deleted. This means that courses from the current and previous 9 semesters can always be accessed.

Additional course areas outside the semester structure are available for permanent courses and meta-courses.

"eLecutres" are video recordings or video transmissions (live or hybrid) from classrooms, which can then be integrated into the eLearning portal "Moodle". "eLectures" are produced for you free of charge by the multimedia team and can be implemented in the following lecture halls:

Audimax, H15, H18, H20, H24, H26, H33, H34, Campus Kulmbach

The multimedia team offers you three different scenarios of "eLectures". We distinguish between a classic video recording of a lecture, a live broadcast of a lecture and the hybrid format, in which not only is the lecture broadcast live, but students can also be connected to the classroom.

In most lecture halls we deliver eLectures for you personally on site.

Video recording

The multimedia team produces the recording for you via the control room in the lecture hall.

There are usually 2-3 built-in PTZ cameras available. The microphones and the video signal connected to the desk can also be recorded.

Live broadcast

The live broadcast is basically like a video recording - only that it is streamed live, e.g. on Panopto. It is also possible to make the video recording available after the live stream has ended.

hybrid format

In the hybrid format, they are also supported by the director. The event can be held via Zoom in the form of a video conference, for example. The students can be seen and heard live in the lecture hall.

Panopto [cf. πᾶν (pān) = everything / ὀπτικό (optikó) = belonging to seeing] is a convenient video management system that teachers can use to make their courses and other learning content available and students can watch them conveniently as streamed videos.
This way, learning experiences can be deepened, repetition simplified and results improved. "Panopto" is integrated into "Moodle" as a plug-in, so you can easily integrate Panopto videos into your Moodle course as learning modules. "eLectures" (video recordings of courses and their live streams) are also made available via the "Panopto" video platform.

I like to call “Panopto” the internal “YouTube” of the University of Bayreuth. The platform is user-friendly and ideal for recording short learning content.

How do I gain access?

You can reach the multimedia server at:

Video platform Panopto

You log in to the multimedia server by selecting the menu item 'elearning' from the 'Log in via' list. You will first be redirected to the e-learning portal for authentication. In order to download the Panopto Recorder, you must be activated once. You can find more information in the Documentation.

What can I do with it?

  • Live broadcasts: On computers and mobile devices
  • Editing: Simple and "non-destructive" editing of content, rudimentary video editing
  • Recording: Any content, anywhere, regardless of equipment (a laptop with a webcam is sufficient - we recommend borrowing one from )
  • Distribution: To selected target groups
  • Management: In a protected, internal video library
  • Display: On almost all devices (MS Windows, Mac OS & iOS, Android)
  • Analysis: Integrated user statistics
  • Integration: Seamless interaction with e-learning (moodle).

Good to know:
A targeted search for keywords in videos (automatic keywording of all spoken & written words) is available in various languages.

Motivating multimedia learning content is crucial for a successful didactic concept. The combination of different audiovisual and analogue media, e.g. in a blended-learning format, is ideal for conveying, transferring and consolidating learning content. Teachers can select the optimal methodology depending on the learning objectives.

We are happy to support you in the realisation of multimedia learning modules together with the ZHL!

Students who are presented with didactically and qualitatively high-quality learning content also appreciate this effort, are more motivated and find it easier to transfer learning content. Multimedia learning modules can be:

Screencasts, how-to film, audio or video podcast, expert interview, VR environments, augmented reality, quiz, ‘Moodle’ tools

The creation of multimedia learning content is of course time-consuming. I recommend that you keep an open mind and start small with us. Perhaps you will enjoy it more than you think.
